Over View

There was a lot of indication that users' wanted a fresher look to Legacy. To achieve this, the programmers included:

  • Orb
  • Ribbon
  • Quick Access Toolbar

User Interface

There was a lot of indication that users' wanted a fresher look to Legacy. So how much fresher can one get than the inclusion of the Microsoft Orb and Ribbon.


The Ribbon is a horizontal version of the older vertical Menu system. In addition it is populated by icons that make it more easily readable for the intended functions. Sub-menu's of the ribbon retain the older vertical second and third level menu orientation.


The My Toolbar is your own personal toolbar that you can customise to your own specific needs. All the tools are available on the rest of the Ribbon, but the My Toolbar allows you to have the functions you use most often on one tab so you don't have to keep switching tabs all the time.


To modify or alter the functions on the My Toolbar tab of the Ribbon, click the small icon in the bottom right corner of the My Toolbar Ribbon, or use the Design > Toolbars > Quick Access Toolbar menu. See the Quick Access Toolbar tab to the right for an explanation on how to add and remove items from the toolbar.

Legacy Orb

First off - what is an Orb?

The Orb started out its life as the Start Button most of us became familiar with from Windows 95.

8 Nov 2006 Windows Vista The Start Button had now morphed to the orb shape.
22 July 2009 Windows 7 Continued with the Start Orb.

When Windows started to use the Orb, Microsoft moved this morphed start button into its other products - here in Word from Office 2007, along with also the new Ribbon Interface.


The Legacy Orb gives you access to convenient options formally from the File Menu such as New, Open, Close, Save Family File As, and Print as well as your MRU (Most Recently Used) files. In addition, there are a few convenient quick reports you can generate from here - Family Group Record, Pedigree Chart, Individual Chart, Ancestor and Descendant Books and Publishing Centre.


Quick Access Toolbar

The Quick Access Toolbar, located on the left side of the Title Bar just above the Menu Bar gives you access to convenient sub-routines within Legacy. You are permitted (bound by programming limitations) to have up to 10 easy access functions.

NB: Because the Title Bar is a small part of the dialog and is not designed to be enlarged, therefore people with sight problems may find this feature cumbersome or awkward to use. Because Legacy is a multi-purpose program designed to facilitate all types of users, people with vision impairment can access these subroutines through other means within the Legacy program.


To modify (add or delete functions to/from) the Quick Access Toolbar, you need to access through the Design menu option, located in the top right corner of the Menu Bar.

Modifying the Quick Access Toolbar (or any toolbar for that matter) is just like how you would have added functions to the toolbar in previous versions of Legacy. Simply drag the desired function from the Available Toolbar Buttons area to the replica toolbar at the top of the Customise Toolbar dialog. View the small (251KB) video below.
